101 Practical Uses
The first ziplock bag ever made was in 1951 by Borge Madsen, a Danish inventor and writer of the time. Using his quick-witted mind, the Danish man developed the earliest prototype with a piece of plastic fastener that had to be slid from one end to the other to seal the package. The “zippers” were then used to seal record labels and offered protection.
In the same year, a company called Flexigrip acquired the rights to mass-produce Madsen’s invention to the market. The company, established by Max and Edgar Austin, manufactured plastic zippers and improved the ziploc bags to what it is today. Flexigrip came out with the “press and seal” used in loose-leaf binders and flat briefcases.
By 1959, the Austin brothers introduced integrated zipper bags to the market, making storing items easier and more convenient. The product was a huge hit. Since then, people have come up with 101 practical uses for it―from bringing our favorite sandwich out to lunch to keeping sold goodies from trendy stores.
